Cerasee: The Bitter Green with a Caribbean & African Soul

Sometimes, the foods with the strongest character are the ones that ask us to appreciate a little bitterness.

Across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, cerasee has long been part of traditional bush medicine. The plant, Momordica charantia, is also known as bitter melon or bitter gourd and is now grown and eaten in many parts of the world.

Its deeply ridged green fruit has a distinctive bitter taste, but that bitterness is precisely what has made cerasee so memorable. Traditionally, the leaves and other parts of the plant have been prepared as bush tea, while the fruit is also cooked as a vegetable.

Today, researchers are particularly interested in cerasee’s relationship with metabolic health—an area that becomes increasingly relevant to women as they move through midlife and menopause.

Cerasee and the Midlife Woman

Menopause is accompanied by changes in body composition and metabolism, making everyday food choices an increasingly important part of long-term wellness. Cerasee is not a menopause treatment, but its nutritional and metabolic properties make it an interesting food to explore as part of a balanced diet.

Human studies of Momordica charantia have investigated blood glucose, cholesterol and other metabolic measures. Some earlier clinical research found improvements in blood glucose among people with type 2 diabetes, but the evidence has been inconsistent and several studies have been small or considered lower quality. A more recent systematic review of randomized trials concluded that the available evidence is still insufficient to determine a reliable metabolic benefit.

Research has also explored cholesterol and triglycerides, with a 2024 meta-analysis finding modest reductions in total cholesterol and triglycerides in several short-term trials. The researchers nevertheless noted the limitations of the available studies, particularly their short duration.

Bitter, Beautiful and Surprisingly Versatile

Cerasee does not need to be disguised to be appreciated. The young fruit can be cooked in savoury dishes, stuffed, stir-fried or combined with other vegetables and spices that complement its distinctive flavour.

In Caribbean kitchens, bitterness can be part of the pleasure of eating. And for the Golden Plate philosophy, that matters: wellness food does not have to be sweet, fashionable or packaged as a supplement to be valuable.

Cerasee is a reminder that some of the most interesting foods are those that have been cultivated, cooked and remembered long before modern wellness gave them a name.

A Note on Herbal Use

Cerasee is different when consumed as a concentrated tea, extract or supplement than when eaten as a food. Because Momordica charantia may influence blood glucose, women taking diabetes medication should speak with a healthcare professional before using concentrated preparations. Research on safety and appropriate dosing remains limited.

Pregnancy is another reason for caution with medicinal preparations, since safety has not been adequately established.

The Golden Cup

Cerasee offers something particularly valuable to the modern woman: a connection between Caribbean/African food heritage and the evolving conversation about midlife nutrition. Its potential metabolic benefits are interesting, but they should remain possibilities rather than promises.

The lesson may be beautifully simple: sometimes nourishing the woman you’re becoming means rediscovering the foods your culture already knew—and giving them a place at today’s table.
